Two must have applications for your Android (tested on Xperia Arc)

YouTube Remote: Download the application free of charge from Android Market. Than go on your PC at http://www.youtube.com/leanback and you have a fully functional remote control for your YouTube experience (search, start, stop, back, forward, volume up or down, etc.). If you connect the PC to your TV the experience is even better.

Google Latitude: besides the fact that it’s fully integrated with Google Maps it shows where your friends are. Don’t bother with privacy issues, your location will be shown only to people you want. I don’t know why people are not using it, I really like this application and could be very useful. Add my Gmail address to your Latitude if you use it already!

Se customizeaza usor, vine cu cateva weidget-uri si aplicatii folositoare (Go Contacts, Go Weather, Go Weather widget, Go email widget, etc), are teme frumoase (inclusiv Ice Cream Sandvich) si este foarte rapid. Iata cateva screenshot-uri:

DIY – Connect a mouse and a keyboard to your Xperia Arc

Very soon Sony Ericsson will launch the Live Dock, a device that will enable you to connect a mouse and a keyboard to your Xperia Arc. But if you don’t want to wait until Live Dock will be available in stores and you don’t want to pay about 30 euro for this gadget you can build a Micro USB Host Cable to take advantage of this feature available with the latest firmware of Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) from Sony Ericsson (4.0.1.A.0.283) and attach a keyboard and a mouse to your Xperia Arc. And by conecting with the HDMI cable to your TV screen you can transform your mobile into a PC!

You can order the Micro USB Host Cable over the internet because normally you don’t find it in stores (I was trying myself but no luck). So instead of waiting for the order I took a normal micro USB cable and an extender USB cable and I followed the instructions in this movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COkLEJGo6vo. Long story short, you need to cut the cables, replace the father USB connector with the mother USB connector (re-connect the wires by color) and at the micro USB connector you need to connect pin 4 to the ground. Below the result:

Although I didn’t tested, the cable should work will all other Androids with Gingerbread 2.3.4. I was not able to connect an USB stick but maybe the format of the file system was not OK.

Xperia Arc tips & tricks

  • When you push the hardware menu button a little longer, the keyboard with Google search function appears.
  • Pinch on the home screen and widget overview shows up.
  • Hold the hardware Home button and a list of Recent apps appears.
  • Go to dialer and dial *#*#7378423#*#* for the service menu. The newer firmware version (4.0.A.2.368) shows whether bootloader can be unlocked or not (under Configuration)
  • Double click on the headset’s button to go to to the next song. Triple click to go back to the previous one.
  • You can get a slightly larger field of vision in the video camera if you disable the image stabilizer.
  • Keep checking on the PlayNow store once in a while. Occasionally, some paid stuff in the Market gets added for free.
  • During the incoming call alert, you can silence the phone by pressing any of the volume buttons. You’ll still have the option to accept or reject the call
  • Clean temp data/cache from apps, especially Browser
  • Forget task killers
  • Long press the back button in default browser to access the browsing history

Some of them might work on X10, Neo and other Android phones

Xperia Arc update 4.0.A.2.368
